Certification Process - Certification program for potential
Therapy Dogs Canada has a 10 step certification process, ensuring that when you and your dog complete all the steps to earn your TDH Certification, you will be prepared to provide exceptional Therapy Dog services to those in need.
Our 10-Step Certification Process ensures that when you and your dog complete all the requirements to earn your TDH Certification, you’ll be fully prepared to provide exceptional Therapy Dog services to those in need.
Please note: We are not a dog training program, but a Certification program designed for potential Therapy Dogs and their handlers who are ready to make a positive difference in their communities.
Step 1 - Schedule your FREE assessment for your canine. Basic starting requirements are a dog that can walk loose on leash (no pulling), sit, down, stay, come on command.
Step 2 - Complete the application online, sign the code of conduct/code of ethics and TDC policies and procedures document.
After this step, we will send you your Therapy Dogs Canada Training course package.
Step 3 - Complete your Online Therapy Dogs Canada course. This can be taken in person when offered.
Step 4 - Complete your written exam based on the materials received in your training package. This will be online and at your own pace when ready.
Upon passing the written exam:
Step 5 - Provide proof of completion for:
A - Canine Health Canada CPR & Emergency First Aid Course
B - Canine Health Canada Advanced K9 Emergency First Aid
C - Standard First Aid & CPR
D - Mental Health First Aid or Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
Step 6 - Provide Proof of:
A - Vaccinations
B - Age
C - Safe Handling
from your certified and practicing Veterinarian
Step 7 - Provide Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check Completed
Step 8 - Book and Complete the Therapy Dog Canada in-person assessment
Step 9 - Provide proof of liability insurance
After this step you will receive your probationary certificate which is valid for one year
Step 10 - Complete 6 Therapy Dog visits and submit feedback assessments.
